Professional Counseling Therapy

Counseling Overview

The theoretical approach to counseling that I employ may best be described as a combination of Dr. William Glasser's Reality Therapy, Dr. Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and along the lines of short-term/brief counseling. It is also integrative and holistic, taking into consideration the whole person and his/her needs which may be enhanced by other complementary/alternative therapies, or other recommendations/referrals to conventional practitioners.

William Glasser

Reality Therapy (RT)

Dr. William Glasser developed Reality Therapy in the mid-1960s. In general, this therapy is centered on the principle that no matter what has occurred in the past, or what one has done in the past, the fact of the matter is that we live in the present, and choose our behaviors in the "here and now." The focus of this type of counseling is on developing and maintaining healthy relationships, as well as accepting personal responsibility for our behavior and actions, and developing the capacity for making better choices.

Albert Ellis

Rational Emotive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (REBT)

Dr. Albert Ellis viewed emotional and behavioral problems as a result of irrational thoughts, assumptions, and beliefs. Generally, people who are involved in REBT are encouraged to accept personal responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, actions, and behavior, as well as confronting irrational beliefs about themselves, others, and situations.

Brief Therapy/Counseling

Brief Therapy is a short-term counseling concept focused on assisting individuals to resolve, and/or effectively manage a specific issue and/or challenge. It is typically solution-oriented with sessions being directed on the "here and now" aspects of a situation. Goal setting is a hallmark of this form of approach to counseling.

Counseling Process and Fees

Process

Clients are accepted based upon compatible results of the initial intake session, and mutual concurrence that a potential exists for a reasonable resolution of the client's issues and/or concerns, and:

1. The client's issues and/or concerns fall into the mild to moderate range for therapeutical intervention and areas of counseling as previously listed, and there is no current/present incidence of substance abuse in any way.

2. The client understands the concept of Brief Therapy/Counseling, and that there is a set number of sessions ranging from 5, 10, 15, or 20 to resolve an issue and/or concern; with 20 being the maximum amount of sessions for resolution. If 20 sessions do not resolve a personal concern, the client will be referred to other professionals for assistance.

3. The client will follow through with all treatment plans, exercises, and/or homework initiated by the counselor, and agreed to by the client. Failure to comply with treatment plans, exercises, and/or homework, as well as frequent tardiness and/or missed appointments, without a 24 hour notice may result in the client being terminated.
