THE DOCTRINE OF NUMBERS

"Above all the other sciences, or parts of mathematics, the followers of Pythagoras esteemed the Doctrine of Numbers, which they believed to have been revealed to man by the celestial dieties. And they pronounced Arithmetic to be the most ancient of the sciences," writes Dr. G. Oliver in The Pythagorean Triangle."

Numerology is a system of interpreting the numerical significance of numbers and their relationship to letters, words, names, et cetera. At the present time, there are several major forms of modern Numerology that have been derived from concepts in the original systems. These systems originated in Babylonia (Chaldean), Egypt (Egyptian Enumeration), Greece (Pythagorean) and Isreal (Kabbalah). Although modern Numerolgy cannot claim a direct lineage to any of the ancients, they are often closely related and similar in concept to those systems.

Being interested in mathematics, metaphysics and spirituality, Pythagoras joined several concepts into his system of Numerology. Pythagorean Numerology looks at the aspects both name and date of birth (Birth Path). The numbers 1 through 9 are used to relate to various letters in the alphabet.

The system of Numerology used for interpretation and instruction, herein, is based on that of Mrs. Elaine Lewis, numerologist, instructor and co-director of the former Michigan Metaphysical Society. She had learned her system from a rabbi. Her system is a modern approach, both practical and rational, and related to the Pythagorean model, as well as her own personal studies.
