Gendai Ki Reiki Ho

Background of Usui Reiki Ryoho, Gendai Reiki-ho,
and Gendai-Ki ReikiI-ho

Gendai-Ki Reiki's roots are based in the teachings of Mikao Usui-sensei, the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, (Society of Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method), as well as several Western based concepts that Hiroshi Doi-sensei (Founder of Gendai Reiki Ho) discovered on his journey of exploration into Reiki. Usui Reiki Ryoho was developed by Usui-sensei and activates deep healing and immunity within the physical body.

According to several reputable sources, Usui-sensei was born August 15th, 1865, in Yamagata district, Gifu prefecture, in the Village of Taniai. Records indicate that he was married and had two children, a son and a daughter. After travelling from Kure, Hiroshima and Saga, in 1926, he died abruptly in an inn in Fukuyama, on March 9th, at the age of 62. He is buried at Saihoji temple, a Buddhist temple, in the suburbs of Tokyo.

Usui-sensei's development of Reiki is said to have occurred after fasting and meditating on Mt. Kurama, in March of 1922.

Reiki is not based upon any particular religious philosophy, although aspects of various Eastern philosophies may be found within its parameters. It was through one of Usui's students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, and his student, Mrs. Hawayo Takata that Reiki began to take form. It is from this Hayashi-Takata lineage that Reiki was brought to the United States and other countries. It is now more appropriately termed Western Reiki to differentiate it from that which is practiced in Japan and other countries that more closely follow the original form developed by Usui-sensei.

Reiki is pronounced in English as "Ray-Key," and originates from two Japanese words, Rei and Ki. Frank Arjava Petter says, "In Japanese (Kanji), the character Rei stands for holy, spirit, mystery gift, nature spirit or invisible spirit, and the character Ki means energy, scene, talent and feeling." Vincent Paul Amador adds, "The two Kanji written together may also mean enlightenment. They represent the universal spirit coming together with our own. Usually Reiki is translated as 'universal life energy."

Amador goes on to say, "Reiki is balance. It works on all levels, the physical, spiritual and emotional levels. Reiki energizes and heals the body…Reiki complements other health care and medical treatments. It may also speed the healing process and minimize the side effects of conventional medical treatments."

Gendai Reiki-ho and Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho
The proper name of Gendai Reiki-ho is Iyashi-no Gendai Reiki-ho and translates to, "Modern Reiki Method for Healing," but is simply termed Gendai Reiki-ho, or Gendai Reiki. Gendai Reiki-ho was developed by Hiroshi Doi (Doi-sensei to his students and lineage). It is rapidly becoming the preferred method of Reiki coming out of Japan. Doi-sensei integrates traditional Japanese with some Western-based concepts into his Gendai Reiki. Most importantly, Doi-sensei has been able to also include techniques from the original Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakki into his system of Reiki. One of the most interesting facets of Gendai Reiki-ho/Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho is the incorporation of Rei-ju into the system. Literally translated, Rei-ju means, "Offering of spiritual energy." Rei-ju was an integral component of Mikao Usui-sensei's practice, and relates to the Japanese name for attunement. It is said that Rei-ju helps to strengthen one's connection to the spiritual energy, and increase one's personal energy.

Iyashi-no Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho may be translated as, "Modern Energy Reiki Method for Healing," and was developed by Richard Robert Rivard-sensei, of Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Rivard-sensei is a direct lineage student of Doi-sensei. It is commonly referred to as Gendai-Ki Reiki. Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho incorporates distance attunements as part of its training, while traditional Gendai Reiki-ho does not at this point in time; other than this unique aspect, Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho is identical to Gendai Reiki-ho. It encompasses all of the information, material, exercises and attunements contained in Gendai Reiki-ho. A Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho Shihan (Master) is, therefore, permitted to teach Gendai-Ki Reiki-ho in either a live, person to person format, or via distance training.
